The doctor criticizes the idea that Coca-Cola is a good hangover cure

A nurse has claimed it’s the “hottest” hangover tip out there – but a doctor disagrees.

TikTok user Rory Uphold took to the platform to share the “hottest” hangover tip from her sister, who works as a nurse.

“Drink a cola. It’s rich in phosphorus,” said Rory’s sister, referring to the mineral that helps produce energy.

In the comments section, Rory’s specified that yes, people should focus primarily on electrolytes and water when it comes to hangovers.

People had a great response to the information.

“OK, so I’m not crazy, McDonald’s Coke really revs me up after all,” commented one social media user.

Another said: “A McDonald’s Coke can wake me up from a coma.”

“I’ve always done it because I miss it after a night out. I never knew why,” said another.

One shared: I am a nurse who has been a tipper for years. I never drink Coke normally, but I ALWAYS keep some in the fridge for hangover days.”

Many questioned whether it mattered whether they drank diet or regular Coke.

However, Dr. Zac Turner, who has four health and medical degrees and specializes in preventative health and wellness, had a different take on the matter.

He said that while it may sound “fun and fizzy”, there is actually a science behind hangover cures.

“Firstly, the caffeine in Coca-Cola can give you a brief mental boost, tackling that post-morning brain fog,” Dr Turner told news.com.au.

“But remember, caffeine is a diuretic, which can make you go to the toilet more and worsen dehydration – a major culprit behind the dreaded hangover symptoms. The sugar in Coca-Cola also provides a quick boost of energy, which can temporarily relieve that weak and sluggish feeling.”

He said that while it may help initially, it will lead to a sugar crash – and quickly – making you feel even worse.

“But here’s the kicker: while Coca Cola may tickle your taste buds and help you feel momentarily better, it doesn’t address the real issue. A hangover is caused by dehydration, inflammation and electrolyte imbalance, all of which Coke does little to fix,” he said.

“Research has shown that the best treatments focus on rehydration, restoring electrolytes and treating inflammation. So while Coca Cola may help with nausea or an upset stomach, water, sports drinks or rehydration salts are much more effective at treating the root cause.

“In conclusion, sure, crack open that Coca-Cola if you want a quick pick-me-up, but for real recovery, prioritize water and electrolytes – maybe add some rest and a big breakfast.

“Consider Coke the ‘feel-good movie’ of hangover cures: fun for a while, but not exactly addressing the deeper plot!”
