A clever man was sent over $300 worth of gifts from his favorite brands – after writing them poems.
Andrew Cunningham, 29, spotted an online tip suggesting supermarkets would send free gifts if customers sent them a poem.
He decided to put it to the test and wrote brand-specific short poems for 50 of his favorite household brands, restaurants and shops, including Duracell, Boots, Waitrose, Odeon, Costco and Yorkshire Tea.
Incredibly, Andrew was sent over $300 in freebies from 16 of the companies he contacted.
His top results included treating himself to $52 worth of Scrub Daddy supplies, $39 worth of Odeon Luxe cinema tickets and $52 worth of Molton Brown merchandise.
He also received free food and drink from KFC, Pringles, Richmond, Tunnock’s and Yorkshire Tea.
Andrew’s experiment was such a triumph that he is compiling more poems for 50 other companies to see how much more he can get.
Andrew, who runs the money blog Capital Matters, from Glasgow, Scotland, said: “I’ve seen people posting online that they got free stuff from supermarkets after submitting a poem.
“I thought ‘why don’t I try it with other places as well as supermarkets?’
“I wandered around my house and kept notes of the most common brands I use, so if I got paid, I knew I’d use them.
“Then I started writing the poems – I tried to personalize them by focusing on all the things I loved about that brand.
“I sent 50 and got 16 for free, which is a 32 percent success rate.
“If I’ve learned anything from this, it’s if you’re looking to buy something expensive soon, email them a poem and they might give you a discount or a payment.”
Andrew’s first approach was to Yorkshire tea, with the following poem:
He was sent $13 bags of decaffeinated tea as thanks for the poem.
While many brands did not return to him – from Persil to the Disney Store and Tresemme to Moet – some did.
After sending personalized poems, he received a pack of 16 AA batteries from Duracell and free cinema tickets from Odeon Luxe and Scotsman Picturehouse, Edinburgh.
He also received a 50 per cent off voucher for his local Thai restaurant, Thaikun, in Glasgow, and tea cakes of the same brand from Tunnock’s.
Andrew said: “The branded wool hat was probably the funniest thing I got. They sent me a box of tea too.”
Some of his most successful results included getting a gift box from Scrub Daddy worth $52 after he sent them the following poem:
He also picked up a selection of hand wash and a branded soap holder from Molton Brown, which he estimated were also about $52.
His poem to Molton Brown read:
He also received a $4 Pringles coupon, a free KFC chicken burger and popcorn chicken, a $6.50 Caesars dog food coupon and a $7.80 Richmond sausage coupon.
Andrew said: “The poems were never meant to be anything serious, they’re just for fun.
“I think the Scrub Daddy was my favorite – we got a selection of sponges, a Dish Daddy and lots of fillings.
“They sent it in a really fun box with beautiful packaging – they’re a really fun company.
“I think that would be my advice – if you know a company that does fun, light-hearted marketing, they’d probably be a good call.”
